Immanuel Kant: Sapere Aude – Daring to Use My Own Reason

Immanuel Kant was an 18th century Prussian/German philosopher, who made extraordinary contributions to epistemology, ethics and political philosophy. His work is too profound and systematic to characterise in a breezy sentence or two; it suffices to say that although many enlightenment philosophers are now studied purely for their historical interest, Kant’s philosophical influence continues to endure today. In this episode I explore three key Kantian themes which intersect and intertwine: the way our conceptual understanding shapes our apprehension of reality, the nature of moral autonomy and the political importance of defending and preserving that moral autonomy.
