On this Sunday, as we enter the Season of Epiphany, we are reminded that worship is God’s great purpose in redemption. We are not saved to be saved but to be worshippers, and the heart of worship is offering. Upon seeing the child Jesus, the Magi bow down in worship, open their treasures and present Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. In so doing, the Magi demonstrate that at its heart, worship is giving. Worship is primarily & essentially concerned with the object of worship, not the worshipper. Worship is not about receiving a blessing but about giving a blessing - giving a blessing to God! Such a view cuts across the consumer mentality so prevalent in our culture and, sadly, in the church. Worship is not about what I like - it's about what God likes. Thus, as we leave a service of worship the question is not "Was I blessed?" but "Was God blessed?” And yet, there is a wonderful paradox in worship. We are blessed in a most profound way through our giving. In fact, the desire to find blessing in blessing God, blesses God! As John Piper says, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” Or to turn the phrase, “God is most worshiped by us when we find our greatest joy in worshipping him.”
