On cloudy days we like to grumble. But we grumble only because we’ve forgotten the sun is still shining overhead. If we easily forget even the simplest truths, no wonder we often forget life’s most important truths. Yet today nothing is more important than remembering Gospel truths. I like what Lane Cohee says: “The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the Good News that God made a way to redeem us—to redeem us—from death and reconcile us to Himself, so that we might have an eternal relationship with Him.” Redeem means to buy something back. It conveys the essential truth that, through Jesus Christ, God has bought us back from eternal death, which is the penalty for our sin. In Ephesians 1:7 Paul writes, “In [Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” The essence of redemption is this: On the cross Jesus shed His blood and sacrificed His perfect heart and life as a ransom. With that ransom, Jesus delivered us fully from sin and death, and eternal condemnation. Today, let’s intentionally remember the Good News of Jesus Christ, thank God for it, and then tell someone in our world how they, too, can be redeemed. What a privilege that is! This is Luis Palau.
