The Context of White Supremacy hosts our 5th study session on the autobiography of Assata Shakur. Formerly JoAnne Chesimard, Shakur was a dedicated member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, convicted of killing New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster, an escaped felon, the first woman placed on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorist List, and an author. She continues to inspire White angst as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently chided Pres. Obama's policy on Cuba: "The condition for which Cuba is able to join the rest of the civilized world must rest on the country's commitment to hand over every terrorist currently being harbored, starting with Joanne Chesimard." Last week's installment described Assata's pregnancy behind bars and the coordinated effort to deny her proper medical care. White prison officials intentionally aggravated her and verbalized their wishes for the child's death. Assata's aunt and attorney helped her gain access to a competent, caring black physician - who was also subjected to Racism. Keep an eye out for the influence of Christianity.
