The novelist Iris Murdoch once wrote that paying attention is a moral act. Paying close attention to tragedies can feel like staring at the sun. It scares you, yet you want to see what happens if you don’t look away. It’s not that it is ever easy to endure suffering of any kind, but at least you can come out the other side enriched if you can endure it mindfully. At least there is restoration and hope that transcends the suffering, and that not only can you learn from it, but you can now have deeper empathy, and possibly even compassion (which some define as empathy combined with action) for others.
