An anonymous woman shares the story of how she and her family experienced ostracization from their Bengali community. The community was focused too focused on assimilation but also traditional upkeep that they neglected to provide communal support to a family that began to fall apart. Constant pressures, both external and internal, to make the community and family proud led to a decline in her family’s health and her overall well-being. Because unfortunately, she was taught “you are only worthy of love, if you don’t bring shame.”
