Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel James "Maggie" Megellas is considered one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division. Megellas, while a platoon leader in the Battle of the Bulge, single handedly destroyed an enemy tank while leading his platoon in the capture of Herresbach, Belgium. The tank stood in the way of Megellas's platoon and, after his destruction of the German tank, his platoon went on to capture the town. Nominated for the Medal of Honor, lack of documentary paperwork at the time caused the award to be downgraded to a Silver Star. Col Megellas was also the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. In addition to a second Silver Star, Col Megellas was awarded two Bronze Stars with "V" device for valor, and two Purple Hearts, among many other decorations. A native of Wisconsin, he died in Texas in April 2020 at 103 years of age.
