Manage episode 290627843 series 2809336
On today's episode of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast, our featured guest is Coach Chris Evans!
Just like most Assistant Coaches and Players, over time they develop a great bond. Coach E and Jermel had an unforgettable encounter.
During pre-game and on his stroll from class to class, Jermel would wear headphones.
One day Coach Evans asked, “President, what are you listening to?”
Jermel replied “That Pac Coach.”
Coach E chuckled and asked who Pac was and invited Jermel over to listen to Tupac’s album “All Eyez on Me.” After two hours of conversation, they not only became great friends but got to know each other.
To this day, Jermel is grateful for the relationship they developed. They are currently working on projects for the DAE Foundation to expand our services across the country.
So many times this game can bring different people together. If you have problems, just play basketball!
Here is a little about Coach E:
“Mel, I am a native of Owego, NY. I attended Owego Free Academy (where I currently teach and coach) and then Geneseo State University (D3) where I played all four years. The three-point line helped out my career - we finally got it in 1987, my senior year. After a brief career in radio, I went to Northern Ireland where I played two seasons professionally. That experience completely changed the arc of my life - people, culture, confidence, etc. I went to Texas in 1992 - coached at a public school for one year and then moved on to Marine Military Academy (a prep school in Harlingen, TX) where I coached and taught English for three years. This was also a unique and profound experience. I landed the College of Charleston job in 1996. The timing was obviously pretty good! I thought I knew a lot about basketball before I got to CofC, but quickly realized I knew nothing. Coach Kresse was a basketball savant, in my opinion. Additionally, what I learned from you, Sedric, AJ, Thad, DJ, etc will be part of me forever - the life lessons, the competitive drive, etc.”
