Episodes 17 and 18, recorded on June 16th 2021, feature Johannes and Sharon Merz, both of whom are anthropologists with SIL. For the past several years they have been leading a training track at EMDC called Culturally Intelligent Media. The Merzs are both lecturers at Moorlands College in the U.K. and work in Benin, West Africa.
During this episode, part 2 of 2, the Merzs unveil the new training track name and reasoning behind that change. They also discuss a possible future online training, though that is likely still far out. And we'll delve a bit into some personal background and learn how the Swiss Johannes met the Brit Sharon. As the episode concludes, the Merzs recommend some general reading on anthropology which includes the following titles:

  • Eriksen, Thomas Hylland. 2015. Small Places, Large Issues: An Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology
  • Eriksen, Thomas Hylland. 2017. What is Anthropology?
  • Rynkiewich, Michael A. 2011. Soul, Self and Society: A Postmodern Anthropology for Mission in a Postmodern World
  • Hendry, Joy. 2016. An Introduction to Social Anthropology: Sharing our Worlds
  • Merz, Johannes. 2019. “Thinking Anthropologically for the Theologically and Missiologically Engaged.” On Knowing Humanity Journal 3 (2): 1-13 at http://www.okhjournal.org/index.php/okhj/article/view/47
