TAP005: Why We Suck at Gratitude. From an early age, it is trained into habit to say Thank You when we receive. If that’s familiar to you and “doing your gratitudes for the day” still isn’t a task that comes naturally, be gentle with yourself. Unintentionally, we’ve been trained for conditional gratitude, or expressing thanks when some thing is given. When we are starting a Gratitude practice with this kind of training in our background, we find ourselves reaching for things that happened that we can be grateful for. We don’t know how to just be in the present moment and acknowledge it without judging it, critiquing it, or wanting to change it. Because of this, unconditional gratitude can be a challenging practice. So here’s how we can start: pick a moment that is repeated throughout the day (for example: while waiting at a stoplight, while brushing teeth or putting on shoes, or while washing hands).
