Episode 2 - Religious Belief and Apologetics with Ranudi Jayasinghe
Manage episode 316438164 series 3288470
What is religion? What does it mean to be religious? How do we justify our religious beliefs? These are questions that have existed almost as long as religion itself, and have been the catalyst for many major philosophical revelations(as well as many angry Reddit threads and Instagram comments that most of us try to avoid). Apologetics is a field of philosophy and religious thought that aims to justify religious belief in the face of criticism, either successfully or unsuccessfully.

On this episode we talk to Ranudi Jayasinghe, a university student, ex-Christian, feminist and philosophy enthusiast, about syllogism in argument, the nature of religious belief and some popular arguments for the existence of God as well as their flaws. We also discuss the ways in which logical fallacies affect our daily lives and how we can avoid them to make our lives better. Most importantly however, we go over the importance of having hard conversations about religion and how we can be civil and understand the viewpoints of those who we vehemently disagree with on a topic that is so deeply personal and so controversial, and yet so relevant to modern life.
