Less than half of the people who vote in a presidential election will actually vote in the local election, which means that many people are missing out on the opportunity to make decisions about public infrastructure, education, and public transit. By not voting in local elections, people miss the opportunity to weigh in on important issues that affect their communities. In an interview, former mayor of Nashville, Tennessee, David Briley, discussed his campaign for circuit judge and how he used text messages to reach potential voters. Briley explained that political campaigns start with identifying potential voters based on their voting history and the typical turnout in a particular election. He emphasized the importance of elevating and putting local elections in front of people to encourage more participation in decision-making that affects their communities.
