From super regulated defence agencies to super energetic Red Bull, Jonathan Walton, Director of Web and Mobile Services and Project Delivery for Red Bull North America, leverages all of his experience to ensure that his teams are engaged, enjoying their work and delivering great outcomes.

I've been lucky enought to work with Jon and his team at Red Bull's North American HQ in Santa Monica, LA, and can testify to the energy and enthusiasm that permeates the company and its people.

Although there is an emphasis on 'work hard, party hard' in the Red Bull culture it's not to the detriment of getting what needs to be done, done.

Says Jon: "At Red Bull we like our internal culture to be an extension of what we do externally. We're known for adrenalin and extreme sports but we are also involved in arts and music and that bleeds into the internal culture too. Everybody here is passionate are what they are doing."

In our conversation for the Culture Makers Podcast (recorded before COVID-19 become a pandemic) Jon talks about:

How Red Bull does a great job of empowering people to chase the things they want to work on (as long as it's good for the company)

Why promoting from within is important for passionate leadership

Being aware of burnout - with empowerment comes the downside of learning your limits. "Not a pleasant feeling but a really good learning experience. I've been through that and now I get to help people through it and they reach their maximum potential."

The difference between advocacy and a mandate in making change happen.
