The relevance of each weather characteristic varies by grid level and stage, which can be split into three categories: power generation, transmission, and distribution. Conductors expand when exposed to high temperatures, increasing length. In low-temperature situations, the opposite is true. The length change varies from one conductor to the next, depending on the conductor's thermal expansivity. When the conductor temperature varies from 100 to 0°, the length of copper conductors changes by 5 feet every 1000 feet, while aluminium conductors change by roughly 7 feet. The length grows as the temperature rises and decreases as the temperature falls.
