The Manitoban Independent Investigative Unit was created after the urgent public pressure was mounting on the province to act after the murder of Crystal Taman at the hands of Derek Harvey Zenk. For a long time it was a concept and on June 18th of 2015, it actually became active. This unit ideally, was created to hold police accountable for this mis-actions, especially when officers act as judge, jury and executioner as they too often do. In practice, all this unit has done is acted as another layer of protection for police throughout the province and prevented families of harmed loved ones from actually receiving the justice they were previously or are currently actively seeking. More often than not, when the IIU becomes involved, the final resolution ends up being a complete dismissal of all potential charges, protecting the ones who have directly caused harm. In this episode, we discuss the IIU, how they operate, what their responsibilities are and then we discuss some of their most recent case dismissals that I disagree with.
