前內閣總理大臣和現任眾議院議員安倍晉三在奈良縣奈良市近畿日本鐵道大和西大寺站附近的第26屆日本參議院議員通常選舉演講中遭槍後身亡。
回顧過去，歷史上不少政壇上的重量級人物，也發生過類似的刺殺案件:知名如美國第16任總統林肯（Abraham Lincoln）、第35任總統甘迺迪（John F. Kennedy）等。
此外，過去也有不少政治人物遭人企圖暗殺，但幸運保住性命:像是第40任美國總統雷根（Ronald Reagan），遭一名身心病患開槍擊中，送醫急救後生命無礙；古巴前領導人卡斯楚（Fidel Castro）則遭人企圖暗殺600多次，不過最後均宣告失敗。
