Jonathan Balcombe was born in England, he has lived in New Zealand and the United States, and currently calls Ontario home. He is a biologist with a PhD in ethology, which is the study of animal behavior. Jonathan's books include Pleasurable Kingdom, Second Nature, The Exultant Ark, What a Fish Knows, SuperFly, and Jake and Ava - A Boy and a Fish. He has also published over 60 scientific papers and book chapters on animal behavior and animal protection. Jonathan served as Director of Animal Sentience with the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy, and Department Chair for Animal Studies with Humane Society University in Washington, DC, and as as Associate Editor of the journal Animal Sentience. He has lectured on six continents, over many years, be sure to check out recordings of Jonathan’s entertaining presentations online.
