We learn of the severe shortage of drivers faced not only by the Canadian trucking Industry but worldwide. Why can’t we find drivers, what can be done to attract younger people and more women to the industry? How does Canadian trucking differ from the US and what is being done by provincial and federal governments to help improve the industry? We speak with Jude Groves, Board Chair of Alberta Motor Transport Association, Dale Howard, a 40-year veteran and current instructor and Doug Sutherland, chair of CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on driver shortage.
The Series
Behind the romance of long-haul trucking where travel, freedom and a sense of wanderlust draw a sense of escapism for those who choose a career riding the open road, lies a different story. There are kinks in the armor of the Professional Trucking industry. Shifting Gears, the Future of the Professional Trucking Industry pulls back the curtain to expose the challenges, hardships and personal stories of those whose lives center around the pull of the open road.
