On November 13, 1974, around 3:15 a.m., 23-year-old Ronald (Butch) DeFeo jr. crept through his family's home building with a recently purchased 35 caliber Marlin rifle, which was one of the guns in his gun stash that he had hidden from his family, and stepped quietly into his parents’ bedroom.
They were sound asleep.
What happened next could not be explained to this day.
