Emma Benack speaks with Gillian Aquino, also known as the artist Y ARA, about her growth as a musician from the Philippines to Taiwan. Gillian began performing as part of a duo back in 2015, and their first official single "Be the One" went on to make it on Taiwan's Viral 50 Spotify list, as well as several top iTunes charts across Southeast Asia. Gillian's partner later left Y ARA, but she has continued on as a solo artist, making music that mixes synth-pop and indie rock.
