As we observe Human Rights Day in the country today, The Santa Shoebox Programmes, which focuses on uplifting underprivileged children, is calling for the government to uphold children’s basic human rights to education, adequate nutrition, sanitation and quality care.

The Government's Early Childhood Development Subsidy, which was created to address this very issue, has made some progress with an increased budget and deregulation to allow more organisations to have access to the fund.

However experts say more needs to be done as the current allocated budget won’t be enough to empower and uplift underprivileged children, in 2022 the subsidy amounted to R17 per child per day.
