Dan Hayes (Class of 2002) has covered Major League Baseball for 17 years as a beat writer, and what's interesting is that he's done it for three different organizations that had three different philosophies about news coverage. Hayes explains reporting on baseball for a traditional newspaper, then the website of a regional sports TV network, and now a subscription-based website that focused on long-form Journalism.
Hayes also shares tips on how to build rapport with sources inside the clubhouse and front office, how sportswriters must understand finance to report on teams, and the importance of separating between your fandom and your reporting.
"Where Ya At?" is a podcast focused on the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. Each week, during the Fall and Spring semesters, host Josh Suchon (Class of 1996) interviews alumni to learn about their experiences as college students, entering the workforce, key steps in their professional development, advice they'd give to current students, and details about how they covered a specific story.
