Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. Today, we’re learning a ton about the Dogri language with linguist and educator, Dr. Devina Krishna. When I tell you I was pumped to learn about Dogri and Dr. Krishna did not disappoint. In this conversation, we talk about how the Dogri language was once considered a dialect of Punjabi but now recently seen as a language independent of Punjabi. Dr. Krishna breaks down the grammar of Dogri and I’m so excited to learn about the tonal quality of the language. We even note in the episode that now that Dogri is classified as its own language, it’s only one of two tonal Indian languages. So exciting. While we’re taking this deep dive on tonality, Dr. Krishna also shows us how they relate to songs and folktales… and you know we love songs and folktales. She also tells us about the Dogri to English dictionary that she created and she tells us how linguists are able to take steps like this to preserve linguistic data to keep a language from vanishing. Many thanks to Dr. Krishna for sharing your language and culture with all of us.
