Brian Mathis from the Atlanta, GA law firm of Huff, Powell & Bailey joins the podcast. Brian was my law school classmate and is one of my closest friends. It was an absolute blast for me to have him on the podcast and there is something for anyone to take away from our conversation. After all these years, he is still teaching me things and inspiring me to be better. We reminisce on the old days, tell some stories, talk about what we learned in law school and our advice for future students.

Brian and his firm specialize in the defense of doctors and hospital in medical malpractice cases. Over the last 2 decades, Brian has been involved in some of the most high stakes medical malpractice cases in the state. He shares his approaches to defending doctors/hospitals and the challenges posed. We talk about the use of experts, the development of themes and why these cases generally do not settle out of court. Trials in his cases last multiple weeks and Brian explains how he physically and mentally approaches the challenge. For your Plaintiffs lawyers out there, Brian tells you what methods work, and what doesn’t work, in developing cases to win settlements and at trial. Brian also talks about his simple approach to marketing and getting cases – just be cool.

Brian is one of the hardest workers I know and we talk about what it takes in life to “Be Great”. We talk about doing what needs to be done to be successful and teaching our children those same skills and traits. His philosophy applies to all facets of his life to include his job, raising a family and exercising. Brian shuts out the outside noise and is the rare person in 2023 who has no social media.

You know we have to talk some sports - Brian is a huge Falcons fan. A lifelong season ticket holder and a ball boy while in High School, we discuss some of his favorite Falcons experiences and the ups and downs of his fandom. We look at the current squad and the steps we would take as GM to bring the Falcons back into contention. Specifically, we look at the 2023 draft and the choice of Robinson over Carter. Brian is bullish on the upcoming season and the core players on the team.
