Strong families make for strong communities and society. When mothers and fathers are supported in their roles and protected, it has a trickle down impact on the children they care for.

This is why the conversation today is so important. According to a general social survey on victimization, 11% of women self-reported being victimized by a spouse while they were pregnant. 40% of domestic abuse incidents begin during a woman’s first pregnancy, and there are many known recent murder cases in Canada where women were targeted because they were pregnant.

Another vulnerable group is children who need adoptive families to become their forever home. Out of the 60,000 children in foster care, 30,000 are eligible for permanent adoption. However, only 2,000 are actually adopted each year.

There are so many more children needing a loving home, and supporting families that want to provide that care in many cases could be the game changer.

Two strong women in the House of Commons that are stepping up to target these needs are here with us today. MP Cathay Wagantall put forward a bill federally to protect pregnant women from violence, and MP Rosemarie Falk just tabled a bill to give more supports to adoptive parents.
