I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “You can’t control other people, you can only control yourself.”

This essentially means you’re going to have to live with your bosses constantly looking over your shoulder nitpicking everything you do. Because you can’t control them!

You’re going to have to deal with your egotistical, self-serving, incompetent coworkers talking down to you. Because you can’t control them!

You’re going to figure out a way to handle the over-the-top workload that never ends. Because you can’t control that either!

These things are consistent. And consistent things create results. Not always good results (obviously).

The result is that your job’s making you miserable.

If I had a dollar for every time someone said they hate their job, I’d never have to think about money again. Why, because it’d be a large, consistent, never-ending stream of income. The consistency would create the “result” of me being very very rich.

So you can’t control the things you hate about your job, but you can control YOU.

So let’s look at what you’re consistently doing that might be playing a role in your job misery.

Well, you’re going to a job you hate every day. But I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first miserable job you’ve had. And nobody really wants to put in all that effort and have the new job be as bad or worse than this one.

So what else are you doing consistently?

  • Getting angry and frustrated about things that are out of your control?
  • Saying yes when you’re already maxed out?
  • Thinking about work when you’re not working (obsessively)?
  • Hitting happy hour to deal with work stress and waking up foggy and cranky?
  • Shutting down in meetings when nobody listens?
  • Constantly replaying negative interactions in your mind?

What would your life be like if you could stop doing these things? Even just one of them?

The thing is, a lot of these consistent habits started long before you ever got into the workforce. And that’s why they’re so hard to break. Most people can “NOT” do them from time to time, but they can’t do it consistently. And to create results, you need consistency.

Imagine how much better work would be if you didn’t think about what your boss or coworkers were doing. If their actions didn’t affect you or make your brain go down the spiral of doom.

Wouldn’t it be easier to get your work done?

Wouldn’t you have more fun when you’re not at work?

So think about it, what are you doing consistently that contributes to your work misery?

Because changing one thing, and being consistent about it, you can change everything!

This is why I love talking to people who’ve made a single change that affected their whole life for the better on my podcast. For Brock Zevan all he did was change one thing. But by changing one thing, and staying consistent, EVERYTHING else changed too.

The thing is, you don’t have to change a BIG thing to make a BIG impact. You can start with one little thing. Like listening to inspiring shows, like my podcast. The consistency will have a bigger impact than you could imagine.
