On this episode, we sat down with the prolific Safuratu Bakare, founder of the fashion brand "D'Beautifiers" and Curator of the African Fashion Show, which has been running for the 5th consecutive year.
Originally from West Africa (Nigeria), she shares her diverse educational journey across different regions of Nigeria; She completed primary school in Ewu, secondary school in Agbeda, and high school in Lagos. She then pursued a degree in Lagos and later attended cosmetology school in South Korea when her husband was transferred there for work.
Her interest in fashion and cosmetics led her to open a salon and boutique in Nigeria. But once on the shores of Australia, she founded "D'Beautifiers," a fashion outlet blending Australian and African fabrics to create modern outfits suitable for various occasions.
The outlet aims to provide a platform for Africans and Australians alike, to wear culturally inspired designs without relying on imports.
Her husband's work relocation to Australia prompted her to establish the African Fashion Show, which aims to represent the diverse and bold colors of African culture through fashion, challenging stereotypes and emphasizing positive stories about Africa.
D'Beautifiers sponsors the African Fashion Show, creating a fusion of Australian and African fabrics in their designs. The show is open to a global audience, and Safuratu emphasizes the importance of proactive ordering due to the production process involving skilled artisans in Nigeria.
