Ep. 30 - Neurodivergence, Schooling, & Matching T-Shirts (with Jo Maselli) - Bruce, Kara, and guest Jo Maselli chat about high school, going unrecognized as neurodivergent, finding your people, safe spaces, and how disability is perceived societally. They have a frank discussion about issues impacting neurodivergent and other learners in school systems and the tension between believing in inclusive public education, working for inclusive public education, and making decisions on best placements for one's own children. This is a follow-up to the last episode (https://youtu.be/LGlYoihimAE). GUEST BIO: Jo Maselli a neurodivergent mother of a young neurodivergent child. She is also an Ontario Certified Teacher with over 15 years of experience as an artist-educator. She has extensive experience in staff learning, training, & development, and with school leadership across a range of initiatives centred around leveraging educational technology to support equity & inclusivity in the classroom & the workplace. Jo is currently a virtual school teacher, delivering a fully contained “Community Class” program in Creative Arts for Enjoyment and Language & Communication Development for neurodivergent high school students, and has a special interest in leveraging a range of technical tools to support alternative teaching & learning practices in both mainstream & special education settings. She has dedicated her career to helping others learn, grow, and succeed on their own terms. Her overarching mission is to support full inclusion of disabled and chronically ill staff and students in education settings by pushing for systemic change while sharing strategies for self-advocacy and allyship. Jo believes that empowering equity-focused professionals and students from systemically oppressed communities will help to create more sustainable and equitable systems and societies at large. She is currently seeking roles in staff learning, training, and development with organizations who share her inner passion for equity-driven innovation. Thing of the Day: Autistic drivers could find their licences in legal limbo depending on where they live after new standards introduced by Danielle Cahill https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-20/autism-driving-licences-new-standards/103108100 __________
