The last offseason before major conference realignment in college football was predictably busy for the coaching carousel. Barring another late departure, there are 30 new head coaches in the FBS, the most since 2012. The carousel appears to have finally slowed so we can all catch our breath, examine the landscape and grade each hire.

In 2012, 31 head coaches were hired across the FBS. Is there a correlation? Perhaps. The spring of 2013 was approaching another inflection point for the sport as administrators prepared for an expanded four-team College Football Playoff in 2014.

This fall could be jolting for fans. Not only will the conference landscape be different with new teams peppered across the Power 4, but divisions have also been erased in the SEC and Big Ten. The impetus for the moves is the College Football Playoff, which expands to 12 teams — administrators are still trying to settle on the format following the departures of 10 Pac-12 teams for new homes.

The SEC and Big Ten are the big boys on the block with those conferences adding six combined teams (Texas and Oklahoma in the SEC; Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington in the Big Ten). Washington State and Oregon State are homeless with only the Pac-12 brand — and a Mountain West schedule — to comfort them at night. Meanwhile, the NCAA is fighting multiple lawsuits that may lead to schools paying players directly within the next decade.

The changes to the sport have been swift, and coaches are coming and going at a near-record pace.

The Coaching Carousel has tracked every move throughout the offseason, and will continue to do so as assistants move from team to team.

With movement atop programs seemingly finished with UCLA hiring DeShaun Foster on Feb. 12, let’s take a look at each hire and examine within the context and challenges inherent and unique to those teams, whether these 30 coaches fit in their new homes.
