In this episode, Maurine sits down with the remarkable Robert Mavorich, also known as Bob Mavorich, a distinguished figure in the world of gospel music. Bob wears many hats as a gospel music historian, accomplished author, and esteemed radio host. His radio program, "Gospel Memorials," celebrating classical gospel spirituals and jubilee music, received acclaim from the African American Museum of Philadelphia and earned Bob the prestigious Gospel Image Award in 2017. This winning streak continued when "Gospel Memorials" was named "Best Gospel Radio Show of the Year" at the Rhythm of Gospel Awards in 2018.

Bob is also a celebrated author, with his debut book, "A City Called Heaven: Chicago and the Birth of Gospel Music," published in 2015 by the University of Illinois Press as part of its "Music in American Life Series." This exceptional work garnered a certificate of merit in historical sound recording research from the Association for Recording Sound Collection in 2016 and was named one of the top non-fiction books of 2015 by the Chicago Book Review.

In this episode, you will learn the following :

  • The issue of sameness in gospel music, where many artists try to imitate others, resulting in a lack of uniqueness.
  • How gospel music frequently conveys messages of spiritual encouragement and hope, offering a vital emotional connection for its audience.
  • The importance of creative lyrics and a distinctive delivery that captures the passion and belief in the message.
  • The process of selecting songs and artists for the JGM pick as the selection process is entirely emotional because gospel music is an emotional genre.
