As schoolchildren, we’re taught about the founding of America. Like most countries, we have a rich, fascinating, and imperfect history. Colonists came over from England and established settlements, often clashing with the residing Native Americans. Life was hard, full of starvation, disease, and conflict. We have preserved much of this history—you can visit Plymouth Rock and a replica of the Mayflower in Massachussetts today, or stop by Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia and tour historic buildings and reenactments of early American life.
But for all of our preservation and knowledge of colonial history, we still have no idea what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke or its many residents, who disappeared without a trace by 1590.
