Flemming Christensen is interviewing Russ Hudson on Essence.

Russ explains that essence is what's always here. Essence is the ground of experience. "It's like the photographic film that's our psyche that's receiving impressions."

There's a lot of different ways a human being can experience essence but they're all elements of presence.

In any given moment we are in some degree of contact with essence. We may or may not recognize it very well.

But if we take the idea that essence is what we really are, it's the fabric, it's the texture of our being, of our soul.

It's what a human being really is when they relax certain defenses and habits and patterns.

Then we can assume that that's always going to be here in some way. Essence is always in part of the picture. We may not be looking at that part of the picture.

Our attention may be completely caught up in issues of personality.

The whole training in the Enneagram is learning to relax in the body and to sense the body, to allow the manifestations of the heart to be here and to notice the activity in our mind such that we're not completely caught up in it.

To notice our emotional reactions and to notice our mental activity. As soon as we're doing that, the part of us that's noticing is not those things. We have a bigger picture that is going to keep moving us in the direction of essence.
