It’s hard to say whether Delta 8 or HHC are stronger, because it really just depends on what you are looking for in your hemp-derived cannabinoid experience. Both of these compounds provide similar effects to traditional Delta 9 Cannabis, and both are typically reported to be slightly less overwhelming for some users than some more common weed products.

HHC is usually associated with a euphoric and cerebral type of “high”, and many users can enjoy it all day while still being able to complete their daily activities. Delta 8 THC is normally going to provide a more dissociating and heavy type of body high, sometimes referred to as couch-lock. So, for regular users HHC may be a better fit, and for those looking to zone out, they might try Delta 8.

What are the technical differences between Delta 8 and HHC?

Without going too far into it, there are some primary differences that separate the HHC and Delta 8 from a scientific perspective. There are many similarities, as both of these are cannabinoid molecules found in the cannabis sativa plant. The differences are in the structure of the molecules themselves.

Delta 8 is extremely similar in molecular structure to Delta 9 THC, which is the primary psychoactive component in more commonly known “weed”. The only real difference between the two is the placement of a double-bond within the molecular chain.

HHC is also similar in some ways, however the primary molecular difference comes from the shape of a cyclohexyl side chain attached to the dibenzopyran ring, rather than the pentyl side chain found in Delta 9 THC. More simply stated, HHC is a hydrogenated form of THC.

How are Delta 8 and HHC legal?

Both of these cannabinoids were made legal in 2018 when the Farm Bill established Federal Guidelines between “hemp” and “cannabis”. Essentially, this new set of laws dictated that any cannabis product containing less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC was now legally hemp, and could be traded and possessed without federal prosecution. There is no specific license or card needed to purchase these products, although many states have enacted their own regulations regarding this class of cannabinoids. Whether or not they are found in nature, all hemp-derived cannabinoids start as CBD which is extracted from legal and compliant hemp and then later converted into consumable cannabinoid isolates and distillates.
