The Engine

Angelo Alessio is one of the founders of Build Cities, a global cooperative of startup cities.

We talk about the state of the Network State.

The concept was popularized by Balaji Srinivasan. Angelo and I mention “the book” a few times throughout the conversation. The book we are talking about is Balaji’s “Network State” - the manifesto of the movement that aims to rethink what a country is in the new digital era of humanity. It’s a very ambitious idea that a community can grow from an online group into a proper state with its own territory, currency, institutions, and diplomatic recognition.

You may be thinking, this is a podcast about doing business in web3. Why are we talking about creating countries all of a sudden?

The podcast is about opportunities and tools that crypto creates for business. There are projects already experimenting with elements of Network State, and a lot of this experimentation has to do with seeking opportunities to create the most beneficial environments for innovation and coordination of capital and labor.
