On Christmas Eve, 1945, a fire destroyed the Sodder family home. At the time, it was occupied by George Sodder, his wife Jennie, and nine of their children.
During the fire, George, Jennie, and four of the nine children escaped.
Five of the children, Maurice, Martha, Louis, Jennie, and Betty, were still trapped inside the flames.
But, With no evidence of the children's remains and the smell of foul play many believe to this day that the children never died in the fire and instead were kidnapped with the fire acting as a diversion.
