Today I'm joined by Bro. Steve Arter and we talk about perspective.
How we see things often effects how we act.
In youth one time I did an example; I had a sketch of a woman, but it was drawn three different ways. It was generally the same sketch, but one way emphasized different lines and another one was more filled in on certain areas, then there was the final sketch that kind of combined the two. We had two groups split up and one group was shown the first sketch, and the second group was shown the second sketch; this gave them a bias. Then we brought the two groups together and displayed the final sketch on the screen in the sanctuary.
I asked, “What do you see?” It was hilarious to have them defend their point of view and argue. Group one saw an old, ugly woman with a large chin and group 2 saw an attractive young woman with a necklace and a Victorian style hat. While this example is hard to convey via audio, we have situations all of the time where we-quote- “see” things dramatically different than our peers simply based on perspective.
Some of the things we try to cover:

  • THERE’S MORE THAN ONE SIDE TO THE STORY
  • WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM?
  • THEIR POINT OF VIEW
  • APPLYING IT TO STAFF
