Quicksilver Messenger Service – Fresh Air (edit) / Just For Love (1970)

Transmusic Airwaves presents Fresh Air Special #2 featuring a WKSU broadcast from February 3rd, 1978 hosted by Jeff Wootton. Our first Fresh Air Special was so well received, that host John Wasylko created a new set in the style of Fresh Air and challenged me to do the same. I answered his challenge by cheating a bit and present the following for your enjoyment.

This show starts off with John’s new set, featuring many vintage tracks along with a few recent ones. The second set is my cheat, because no original recording of this set has surfaced. This set has been faithfully re-created from playlist notes of the original February Fresh Air six-hour broadcast. The third set in today’s show is from a mixing board tape of the original broadcast.

This third set is notable for the phasing effect applied to Pink Floyd’s classic, Echoes. This was achieved by switching the broadcast console into dual-mono mode (highly frowned upon by the WKSU engineering staff) and having 2 copies of Echoes, each playing on a turntable.

With the board setup to play only the left channel of one turntable and the right channel of the other turntable, the stereo image could be shifted by rubbing the turntables to alternately slow each of them down slightly while live on-air. The surprise ending is included. Headphones recommended!
