Brett embarked on his aviation journey in 1987 with the Royal Australian Navy, where he began his career as a Naval Aircrewman within the naval Fleet Air Arm. Throughout his tenure, Brett participated in numerous Fleet support rotary wing operations, and he served as part of the ships' crew on both HMAS Success and later HMAS Stalwart. Notably, Brett was the Flight Aircrewman aboard a naval Wessex 31B Helicopter when it encountered an engine failure and had to execute a controlled ditching off the coast of Malaysia.

In 2002, Brett transitioned into the Rotary Wing Aeromedical & Search and Rescue (SAR) sector. He operated as crew on the Bell 412 helicopter and held positions with Emergency Management Queensland Helicopter Rescue, CareFlight Queensland, and subsequently with Australian Helicopters on Horn Island. Later, Brett returned to EMQ Helicopter Rescue at Archerfield Base.

Furthering his qualifications, Brett obtained his Commercial Pilot Helicopter License in 2010. He then joined the Heliwest Group in 2012, where he served as an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) & SAR pilot in Queensland before transitioning to the Pilbara region. In addition to his flying roles, Brett holds a Grade II Flight Instructor Rating, demonstrating his commitment to both operational excellence and training within the industry.
