A discussion of how Kirkland, Washington encourages its residents to remove turfgrass and disconnect the downspouts of their homes to channel the rainwater to engineered structures called raingardens. Raingardens collect rainwater and slowly release the rainwater into the soil mimicking how forests manage water. The structures are planted with water-loving plants to add beauty and functionality to the landscape.
