周敬王二十四年，吴国国君阖闾听说越王允常已死，儿子勾践继位，于是趁机出兵攻打越国。不料出师不利，反而被越国将军灵姑浮砍伤，回国后不久就病逝了，他的孙子夫差继位。夫差因痛恨越国害死祖父，便命下人每次看到他就要大喊：“夫差，你忘了越王害死你祖父的事了吗？”夫差则答：“不敢忘记！”足见他对越国之恨。
