THE TRUE CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On the night of October 26, 1858, West 30th Street, New York City, was rocked by a violent family tragedy. Elizabeth Carr, a servant for the Gouldy family, ran from their home screaming for help, alerting neighbors and police to a gruesome scene inside. They found the Gouldy family members severely injured from head wounds inflicted by Frank Gouldy, who had succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Frank Gouldy, the troubled 20-year-old son of wealthy retired lumber merchant Francis Gouldy, had a history of erratic behavior. After being reprimanded by his father for stealing money meant for a business venture, Frank attacked his family with a hatchet. His father, stepmother Jane, and younger brothers Nathaniel and Charlie were all critically injured. Elizabeth Carr and another servant, Joanna Murphy, were also attacked, with Carr bravely fighting off Frank before succumbing to her injuries weeks later. Despite the brutal assault, the Gouldy family, including a pregnant Jane who later gave birth to a healthy baby, survived their injuries. Frank's attack was spurred by longstanding familial tensions and his own troubled disposition, culminating in a night of horror that left a lasting impact on those involved.
