It's a shame that most public policy is judged by its intentions rather than its results. Benjamin Ayanian joins me to talk about his new book on the subject. It's called Beyond Intention: How Progressive Economic Policy Initiatives Would Harm Society's Most Vulnerable.

The strongest evidence that I'm becoming an old man can be seen in my growing certainty that we were a better society when people dressed up before going in public. Jeff Minnick wonders, how did America become a nation of slobs?

Apparently, it's very concerning to some folks when we doubt the legitimacy of the state's authority over us. Paul Rosenberg has an excellent examination of the social contract and whether it meets the criteria for legitimacy.
