Canopy is the Portuguese based label, run by New Zealander Sumosui. Reissuing forgotten tropical gems alongside modern productions, Canopy focuses on synth infused afro funk, disco, boogie, and derivatives of these genres that emerged from the creative meeting pots of West Africa & The Caribbean. The contemporary side of the imprint presents remixes of vintage works, in an afro-disco direction. Releases by Bosq, Aroop Roy, Kiko Navarro, Captain Planet, Opolopo , Joi N’Juno and a host of colourful talent have graced Canopy Records, with fans like Folamour and Antal making it an imprint to keep your ears on. Joi N’ Juno is musical multi-talent David Baluteau also known as Damny. Over his twenty-five-year career in music he has worn many hats. Lead singer and founding member of electro group La Phaze, touring musician performing with some industry greats, and studio wizard producing albums for artists like Keny Arkana, Sol Pereyra, Yawdel, Orange Blossom, and Elephanz. His latest project Joi N ’Juno blends warm vintage keyboards and killer basslines with triumphant horns and hedonistic vocals. Fusing influences of African and tropical funk with disco, cutting and splicing outernational flavours with slick contemporary production techniques, the result being an intoxicating and invigorating recipe that challenges any dancer to sit still. His first solo album as Joi N’Juno is Samemala, signed to Canopy Records and scheduled for release in October in sync with an extensive live tour. Leading the charge, the title cut tells the story of a of joyful dance via a message of love. It’s catchy, warm and punchy, with rousing horns and rhythmic drums. Samemala is sure to brighten your days.
