Gestational Diabetes affects around 1 in 6 Australian women who are pregnant. Around 41,000 women are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes each year. Gestational Diabetes is the fastest growing form of diabetes in Australia, with the average age of women bearing children increasing, excessive weight gain during pregnancy and Australia’s changing ethnic makeup all being contributing factors. Women with Gestational Diabetes are at a higher risk of serious complications during labour and birth that can have a lifelong impact. With appropriate care and support during pregnancy, many of these complications are preventable.

Together with Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Expert Dr Peter Jurcevic, in this episode we discuss:

- What gestational diabetes is

- At what stage of pregnancy women typically show signs of having it

- If diet and lifestyle can cause gestational diabetes

- What the signs and symptoms of gestational diabetes are

- How gestational diabetes is diagnosed

- Is gestational diabetes hereditary

- What some of the factors which could make you ‘high risk’ for gestational diabetes

- How gestational diabetes affects the baby and the mother's health

- What the management plan for gestational diabetes is

- How you can help to manage gestational diabetes through diet and lifestyle factors - What happens when baby is born

- Does having gestational diabetes make you a risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes once the baby is born

This is a must-watch episode for all those who are pregnant.
