Strike action by members of the National Advocacy Service locally have been described as “the last resort.”

That's the view of Manorhamilton Independent Councillor James Gilmartin who attended Monday's protest outside the Citizen's Information office in Sligo.

Workers returned to the picket line to campaign for a first pay increase in 14 years despite the recommendations of the Labour Court.

The service provides more than 1,500 disabled people each year with in-person advocacy interventions in areas including housing, access to justice, health care, safeguarding and supporting in decision making.

Councillor Gilmartin says the strike action has left the service users in a vulnerable position:
