Bryan Kohberger's attorney, Anne Taylor, filed a memorandum requesting a change of venue for his trial, arguing that an impartial jury cannot be found in Latah County, Idaho. Kohberger is accused of murdering four University of Idaho students in November 2022. The defense claims that the extensive pretrial publicity, the small size of the community, and the salacious nature of the alleged crimes have created a pervasive bias that would prevent a fair trial.
Taylor asserted that merely expanding the jury pool within Latah County would not mitigate the prejudicial effects of the publicity. She requested the trial be moved to a location with less exposure to the case. However, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson opposed the change, stating that the case's notoriety extends beyond the county, making it unlikely that a change of venue would resolve the issue. He emphasized that the trial should remain in Latah County, where the crime occurred, to give the local community closure.
