The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) has established a specialized drone unit known as the "Operadores Droneros" or "Drone Operators," which has significantly enhanced their operational capabilities. This unit uses commercially available drones, primarily sourced from China, and modifies them to carry and deploy explosives. The drones are fitted with shrapnel, such as buckshot and nails, to maximize damage. Training for these operations has involved foreign experts, including Americans and Colombians, who have taught cartel members how to build explosives and maneuver drones effectively.
The CJNG has used these weaponized drones in various attacks, most notably against military convoys in Michoacán, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The drone unit, although small, is highly effective and has drawn significant attention from Mexican authorities. In response, the Mexican government is considering legislation to arm law enforcement with anti-drone technology.
The CJNG's collaboration with other criminal groups, such as the Familia Michoacana, has also facilitated the spread of drone warfare tactics. This alliance has led to an increase in drone strikes, forcing residents to flee their homes in regions like Guerrero. These tactics are employed to control territories crucial for drug trafficking and to eliminate resistance from local self-defense groups.
