Fearing authenticity will:
- Distance us from others
- Drain our time and energy

Authentic - Greater Purpose
Feelings - Selfish Wants

How do we avoid the less-than of living a disingenuous life and experience the fullness of an authentic life?

Hidden Obstacles:
The Actor
The Hypocrite
The Sell-Out

At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
- Genesis 3:7-13

…the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
- Genesis 3:7-13

The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
- Genesis 3:7-13

Shame – Covering – Hiding – Blame

OBSTACLES TO AUTHENCITY:
Image protection – from our flaws
Rejection protection – from our failures
Shame protection – from our feelings

But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”
- Luke 23:40-43

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
- Luke 23:40-43

THIEF ON CROSS:
Publicly humiliated and tortured
Permanently excluded from life
Physically tied to flaws & failures

GOD THROUGH JESUS:
Loved as son
Pursued not abandoned
Covered in grace not guilt

God’s love and grace found in Jesus FREES us to live authentically for Him and not others!
