Jacques Cartier planted a 30-foot wooden cross overlooking the bay of Gaspé (Quebec, Canada) on first exploration trip in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, symbolizing the ownership of the territory on behalf of the French King, Francis I, on July 24th, 1534.
