In 1972, eight members of 'Black September' stormed the Olympic village, killed two members of the Israeli contingent and took nine hostages. A bungled rescue attempt on the 6th resulted in the deaths of the hostages and one Munich police officer.

The 12 who died were: Moshe Weinberg , Youssef Romano, Yossef Gutfreund, David Berger, Zev Friedman, Eliezer Halfin, Mark Slavin, Amitzur Shapira, Kehat Shorr, Andre Spitzer, and Yakov Springer. The German police officer was Guido Schlosser.
